Finding the best organic and grass-fed beef online can be a daunting task. There are tons of options out there but it can be overwhelming figuring out who offers the best quality meat products for the price.
When it comes to healing from autoimmunity, following an AIP diet, or simply managing overall health, it's really important to source high-quality foods. This allows us to reduce our exposure to toxins and increase our intake of crucial vitamins and nutrients.
While this post is mainly about online places to find grass-fed beef, I’ll also touch on a couple of local sourcing ideas as well.
Below, I’ll cover the ins and outs of several fantastic places to find grass-fed and pasture-raised beef online. I personally use several of the companies listed below and love what they offer.
Key Things to Look for When Shopping for Grass-Fed Beef:
- Allowed to graze on open pastures for most of, if not their entire lives (see definitions below on pasture-raised vs grass-fed)
- Humanely raised
- Antibiotic-free
- No added hormones
- Pesticide-free
- Sourcing transparency- does the company tell you exactly where it's getting its meats?
Let’s define a few things:
Organic
Organic sounds nice but it’s not necessarily everything. Organic means that a third party has verified that certain standards are met. Some of these include:
- Animals must be raised in a way that accommodates health and natural behavior
- Allowed year-round access to outdoors (except in specific weather conditions)- at least 120 days
- Fed certified organic feed
- Raised on certified organic land
- No antibiotics or growth hormones
- Produced without genetic engineering, ionizing radiation, or sewage sludge
All these things are important. However, organic certification makes no guarantees about how much actual grazing an animal does in its life. If just has to have access to the outdoors, so it's possible it could be fed quite a bit of grain in its lifetime.
Pasture-Raised vs Grass-Fed
It’s important to understand the difference.
Pasture-raised
This means that an animal has lived some portion of its life grazing from pastures and is not confined only indoors. The USDA does regulate this claim for meat and poultry and the definition is not well-defined, so some producers use it a bit freely. Most cows are at least born on a pasture which means they could (in some cases) be called pasture-raised even if they are fed-grain for a large part of their lives.
Grass-Fed
This means that the animal has only grazed on grass for its whole life aside from mom’s milk at birth. 100% grass-fed is ideal in terms of the nutritional profile of the meat. Here are some key pros to grass-fed beef (compared to grain-fed):
- Leaner- lower in saturated fat
- Higher in vitamins A, E, B12, B6, and K
- Higher in selenium and zinc
- Higher in omega-3 fatty acids
- Higher in antioxidants
Buying Locally
In many cases, you may have some awesome resources locally for getting high-quality meat, organs, and bones. These resources should be taken advantage of when possible.
Sourcing the highest quality meats directly from local farms is one of the best ways to source grass-fed beef locally. Eatwild is a great resource for finding local grass-fed meats, eggs, and dairy. Check out their state-by-state directory (+Canada).
Grass-fed beef can be easily found in health food stores like Whole Foods, Sprouts, and Trader Joe’s. It’s also pretty easy to find it in big wholesale stores like Costco or Sam’s for reasonable prices. If you're doing AIP, you may want to check out my Whole Foods AIP Shopping List, Sprouts AIP Shopping List, and Trader Joe's AIP Shopping List.
Local grocery stores like Walmart, Aldi, Kroger tend to have organic, grass-fed meats too. The downside to some of these products is that they're often sourced outside the US.
Aside from local stores, you may have a good butcher nearby. This can be a good way to find meats, organs, and bones that have been sourced from local farms.
However, depending on where you live, availability may be limited. In this case, getting your meat online can be a lifesaver!
Buying Beef Online
There are some big benefits to buying your beef online. The biggest of these is that variety of options for quality, cuts, and types of meat is quite wide.
Buying high-quality, pasture-raised, and organic meats online is getting easier and easier. It’s convenient, reliable, and many places are reasonably affordable. There are a bunch of amazing online meat delivery services out there so let’s get into it!
BucherBox
ButcherBox offers 100% grass-fed beef, organic free-range chicken, crate-free pork, and wild-caught seafood. They work with farms that raise their animals humanely and with sustainability in mind.
What They Offer:
- Humanely Raised Meats
- Grass-fed Grass-Finished Beef
- Crate-Free Pork
- Organic Free-Range Poultry
- No Antibiotics Ever
- Wild Caught Seafood
- Flexible Subscriptions
- Shipping to 48 states, no Hawaii, Alaska, or Canada
How it Works: Choose a subscription box- they offer a variety of sizes and types to fit your household.
Price: $99-$169 per month (or per box if not having deliveries every 4 weeks)
Pro(s):
- Their memberships are super flexible. You don't have to get a box every month if it's not in the budget- you can set up delivery for every 2, 4, 6, or 8 weeks and you can skip deliveries as needed. You can also change your type of box, box size, and delivery frequency at any time to fit your needs.
- They're almost always running a promotion for free meat or seafood- sometimes with your first order, sometimes for the life of your membership. Check out the current promotion.
Con(s):
- They’re a bit pricey but high-quality meat costs money. However, they’re not nearly as pricey as I originally thought. When I do shop for meat in my local stores, the prices are pretty darn high even for non-organic, lower-quality meats. I’d rather know where my meat is coming from, be able to hand-pick what I want online and have it show up to my door when I need it. The benefits far outweigh the costs.
- Most of the meat is sourced in Australia which has high animal welfare standards but for those who prefer to source closer to home, this is just something to be aware of
White Oak Pastures
These guys are a 6-generation farm based in the small town of Bluffton, Georgia. They place a huge focus on regenerative agriculture and humanely raising their animals. I’ve used this company for a couple of years now and love them!
How It Works: Buy everything a la carte. No Subscriptions.
Price:
- Variable depending on what you order.
- Free Shipping on orders over $249.

- Village Loyalty Program- get perks when you purchase a certain amount from them over time.
- Shipping to 48 states, not Alaska or Hawaii
Pro(s):
- Awesome selection of bones, organs, and meats.
- They're super transparent about their practices
- They use the entire animal- no waste
- They carry less common meats like wild game, goose, duck, rabbit, alligator, etc.
Con(s):
- Some things go out of stock pretty easily as these guys get more popular. So, if you’re looking for something specific, it may or may not be available. I think that’s kind of the nature of this type of business though.
- Recently increased shipping charges for some locations- This is a new thing (as of June 2022). They still ship all over the US (except Alaska and Hawaii) but it may cost a bit more depending on where you live. They've recently made the decision to adjust their shipping practices due to logistical challenges. Basically, if you live a certain distance away from them, you may be required to pay express shipping costs in order to get your meat to your door in good, fresh condition. Check out their shipping policy to learn more.

Con(s):
- Some products have kind of a large range for item weights. For example, when you order “1” chicken breast package, the weight is anywhere from 10-23 oz for $12.25. Which is it? If it’s closer to 23 oz, not a bad deal but 10 oz makes it more pricey. Luckily most of their other products don't have weight ranges quite this big.

Check out their sourcing page for more information.

- You can use this link for $10 off your first order.
How it Works:
- They're subscription-based but the subscription is free and you can pause or skip your weekly order at any time.
- Choose a delivery day. You’ll get some email reminders from Misfits when your shopping window opens. For example, my shopping window is Friday-Sunday. Then, on Sunday evening (or Monday morning), my order is automatically placed and I get my box on Thursday.
- Add some things to your cart- $35 is the order minimum. Assuming you have at least $35 of groceries in your cart by the end or the ordering window, your order will be placed automatically.
- There's an option to have Misfits start a cart for you and then you can add to it from there OR just order a la carte.
Price: Membership is free. Minimum order is $35. “Cold Pack” minimum is $30.
Pros:
- High quality foods.
- Good prices.
- Consistent reminder emails so I remember to build my order!
- Low order minimum
Con(s):
- Occasionally an item will get damaged during shipping. Usually it’s been delicate produce. Berries for example don’t always travel very well. A couple times, the cold packs were placed directly on a bag of lettuce and it ruined the lettuce. Things like that. That being said, 95% of my items arrive in great condition and the ones that don’t are refunded pretty easily.
- I don’t really like the option to have them curate a box for you because it gets complicated if you have diet restrictions. They’re not able to accommodate diet restrictions with the curate system so I choose to just build my own box.

Hi, My first visit here. I was just searching for Organic Bone Broth and not happy with the choices. Having made my own bone broth from organic beef bones from Whole Foods, I wanted something better and didn't find the time to research it. But I am sick and need quality bone broth to get better so I have plenty of time on the couch to look into it. I'm discouraged. A lot of terms have changed and my head is spinning. I don't think what is available through Whole Foods/Amazon could be the best I could find. And it is limited availability. It used to be just organic grass fed. Now I'm reading 'grass finished' ? Used to be the USDA Organic seal and now I see Kettle & Fire offering Regenerative Organic. What? *sigh* And without a USDA Organic seal on it. I don't have the energy or patience to get a phD in soup bones before I even get started helping myself get healthier. You seem to have done a lot of work on the subject. Can you help me sort it out, point me in the direction of a local source of the best soup bones I can get? Would really love your help. Thank you, Liz

Hey Liz, Thanks for reaching out. I'm sorry to hear you're not feeling well. I know all the different terms can get confusing. Grass-fed is basically 100% grass-fed, whereas grass-finished means the animal ate some amount of grain for part or most of its life then grass the last couple months. The regenerative organic label is new to me too! It sounds like it's actually a step above regular USDA organic as it requires USDA organic standards + specific requirements for regenerative agriculture. So that's why you wouldn't see the regular organic label next to the regenerative organic one. You can read about it here. To point you towards a truly local source for bone broth, I'd need to know your location. I'd be happy to help narrow it down to a good local source if you let me know what city you live in. That being said, some of the farms listed on this post also sell bone broth and bones for broth so they would be good sources. The farms aren't all certified organic because it's expensive but most of them have organic practices. I've gotten bone broth from White Oak Pastures and it was pretty good. Bonafide Provisions also has an AIP compliant chicken bone broth (if you're doing a strict AIP diet) that is organic and free range. Another farm that sell bone broth: Primal Pastures - This one has peppercorns in it (like many broths) so it's not AIP compliant but good otherwise. Hope this helps.
