Whether you’re a professional chef or a novice trying to sharpen your skills, everyone needs a fully stocked spice cabinet in their kitchen. While there are some spices that you can probably do without, there are some staples that you should always keep on hand. Here are five essential spices you should keep in your kitchen cabinet.

    Garlic Powder

One of the unique ways to customize your kitchen is by getting a functional spice rack or cabinet. But you’ll need the proper spices to fill it with, and you should start with garlic powder. A hint of garlic flavor works wonders in dishes of all kinds. If you don’t want to overpower your meal with fresh cloves of garlic, you can use a dash of garlic powder to do the trick.

    Onion Powder

Onion powder is next on our list of essential spices, and for a good reason. Often an underestimated spice, onions are a staple taste for any palette. Onion powder works wonderfully in soups and stews and as an ingredient in dry rubs for meats of many kinds. You can also utilize onion powder in any recipe requiring fresh onions as an ingredient.

    Ground Cumin

You should also consider adding ground cumin to your spice cabinet. Cumin is a popular ingredient in many cultural dishes, and rightfully so. The flavor is earthy, aromatic, and a little goes a long way. Cumin is also essential in curry and chili powders, making this a versatile ingredient in your kitchen. You can use cumin to spice up your meats, vegetables, soups, and stews.

    Ground Turmeric

Turmeric is another beneficial staple to keep in your kitchen. Turmeric has a bright orange color and an earthy bitterness that helps balance the flavor profile of many dishes. People commonly use this spice in Indian and Thai dishes to enhance flavors and bring out the taste. Turmeric pairs well with chicken and rice, noodles, couscous, or quinoa dishes, to name a few.

    Ground Cinnamon

And, of course, we can’t forget about cinnamon. Cinnamon is a must-have spice to keep in your cabinet if you love to bake. Just think about the deliciousness of fresh, warm cinnamon rolls. You couldn’t achieve that delightful flavor without this essential spice. However, cinnamon isn’t just for baked goods. This spice also works quite well in savory dishes.

Now that you know the five essential spices to always have in your kitchen, you can start stocking your spice cabinet today. Of course, there are several more worthwhile spices to have, but these five are a great jumping-off point.

Some recipe that use these spices include:

    Moroccan Chicken Stew

    Instant Pot Beef Stew

    Easy Chicken Florentine
